I. SONGS OF FREEDOM
a) Match the types of music with their definitions
gospel / blues / jazz / soul music
Def.1: Started at the end of the 19th century / Made up of "God" and the Old English word for "story" / Followed church tradition of call-and-response between pastor and flock / Includes clapping and dancing / Expression of community and a celebration of life / Made church worship vibrant and exciting.
Def.2: Term first used in the 1960s / Combination of rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz and rock / Expression of ethnic pride during the Civil Rights movement / Contains intense feeling and down-to-earth sexuality / Direct emotional delivery and dynamism.
Def.3: Originated in New Orleans / Combination of the irregular rhythm of Ragtime and the blues / Played by bands composed of brass instruments and a rhythm section / Its main feature was the improvisation of brilliant soloists, creating new interpretations, according to their inspiration, at each performance / Reached its highest popularity in New Orleans in the 1920s / Later, it spread North, notably to Chicago and New York.
Def.4: Developed in the southern regions of the USA after the Civil War / Started as as work songs and "field hollers" (shouts of lamentation while picking cotton) / The Great Depression caused its geographical dispersal when millions of African-Americans left the south for the industrial cities of the north, in particular Chicago, Detroit and St Louis / soloist was joined by guitar, piano or harmonica accompaniement / lyrics became more urban (abandonment, unemployment, alcoholism...) / the music was full of a great rhythmic and emotional intensity.
